WASHINGTON — U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) Chair Jerome Powell said Wednesday that the U.S. economy is “still a ways off” from the progress that the Fed wants to see before tapering the central bank’s asset purchases.

“At our June meeting, the (Federal Open Market) Committee discussed the economy’s progress toward our goals since we adopted our asset purchase guidance last December,” Powell said in testimony prepared for delivery at a hearing before the House Financial Services Committee. (US-Fed-Assets)
