WASHINGTON, June 16 (Xinhua) — The Golden State Warriors triumphed over the Boston Celtics 103-90 in Game 6 of the NBA Finals on Thursday, leading the championship series 4-2 to bring home their fourth title in the last eight seasons.
The Warriors’ star guard, two-time regular season Most Valuable Player Stephen Curry was named MVP of the NBA Finals after clinching 34 points.
In Game 5, the Celtics’ tight defense made Curry suffer behind the arc, disjointing his 233 straight games of making at least one 3-pointer.
Boston continued to apply this strategy after tip-off as they sent suffocative defense and let Marcus Smart post up, aiming to trouble the sharpshooter with fouls.
The strategy seemed to work well as the Celtics started the game with a 14-2 run also thanks to Jason Tatum and Jaylen Brown’s hot hands. But Curry and Draymond Green’s efforts from 22 feet away helped the Warriors overturn the lead with 27-22 to end the first quarter.
Not waiting for their third-quarter flurry routine, Golden State had a 10-0 and a 15-2 runs to gain a double-digit lead in first half.
Coming back from the locker room, Curry and Otto Porter had no intentions to hold the fire, helping the Warriors to enlarge the gap to more than 20 points. Even though Smart and Robert Williams led the Celtics with a 15-2 run to cut the deficit to a single digit, they couldn’t guard the Warriors in the final period.
Curry scored 34 points and dished out seven assists for the Golden State, Andrew Wiggins had 18, and Jordan Poole added 15.
On the Celtics’ side, Brown led the team with 34 points, and Al Horford had 19 and grabbed 14 rebounds. Tatum only shot 6 of 18 to finish with 13 points.
A lot has happened since the Warriors’ last Finals appearance in 2019, witnessing Kevin Durant left and Wiggins joined, while the championship marks a successful rebuild for the Warriors.
“We found a way to get it done,” NBA Finals MVP Curry said after accepting Larry O’Brien Trophy. “Our experience are parts of the championship pedigree, we have built this for more than 10 years.”
Recovering and returning in the midway of this season, Klay Thompson claimed the comeback. “It all paid off”, he said. “It’s crazy to see it in real time.”
It is the fourth championship for Curry, Thompson, Green and Andre Iguodala, and the ninth for coach Steve Kerr, who had five rings as a player and four as a coach. Enditem
