TOKYO, July 14 (Xinhua) — Tokyo reported 1,149 new COVID-19 infection cases on Wednesday, topping the 1,000-case line for the first time since May 13, with 1,822 new cases nationwide.

The new infections in Tokyo averaged 823.3 per day in the week through Wednesday, up 30.3 percent from a week ago, compared with 631.7 a week earlier. Wednesday’s figure is up 229 from the previous week, logging a week-on-week surge for a 25th straight day.

The number in the capital went over the 920 cases reported a week ago and is the most since 1,184 infections on Jan. 22, which came just days after the fourth COVID-19 state of emergency of Tokyo was declared and just over a week before the start of the Olympics from July 23.

The figure of severely ill COVID-19 patients under the metropolitan government’s criteria declined to 54 from 58 the previous day. The capital also reported four deaths linked to the virus, bringing the death toll to 2,262. The total number of cases in the capital now reached 184,119.

The Japanese government is proposing to limit the movement of citizens during the global sporting events within the emergency state lasting until Aug. 22, which covers the duration of the Tokyo Games, as well as the summer vacation period including Japan’s Bon holiday in mid August. Enditem
