BANGKOK, May 27 (Xinhua) — Thailand’s exports, a key driver of the country’s economic growth, climbed 9.9 percent year on year in April, data showed on Friday.
The growth, below market expectation of 14.6 percent, moderated from a rise of 19.5 percent registered in March, according to data released by the country’s Ministry of Commerce.
The country’s exports have kept expanding for the 14th consecutive month, but there has been pressure from the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to the ministry.
The ministry expected the country’s exports to expand further in 2022 as agricultural and food product exports tend to increase and a weakening baht helps boost exports. It also warned of risks such as rising inflation in major trading partners that may dampen exports.
The country’s imports increased 21.5 percent year on year in April, with the growth beating market expectation of 16.4 percent, resulting in a trade deficit of 1.91 billion U.S. dollars.
During the January-April period, exports expanded 13.7 percent from a year earlier while imports rose 19.2 percent, according to the ministry. Enditem
