MOGADISHU, May 13 (Xinhua) — The Somali National Army backed by international partners killed 44 al-Shabab militants and injured more after carrying out an operation at the Ali Fuuto area in southern Somalia, the government confirmed on Saturday.

The Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism said the joint forces conducted the operation on Friday evening following an intelligence report received by National Intelligence and Security Agency that the militants were regrouping to plot attacks on the residents.

“The operation destroyed the terrorists’ strongholds where they were regrouping and storing weapons at the time of sting operation,” the ministry said in a statement issued in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.

It said the government is committed to flushing the militants out of their hideouts in the southern region and the rest of the country. Enditem
