MADRID, June 10 (Xinhua) — FC Barcelona on Friday announced that the club has reached agreement with utility player Sergi Roberto to extend his contract until the end of June 2023.

The 30-year-old’s current contract was due to expire at the end of the month and he is thought to have accepted an important pay-cut to continue at the only club he has represented in his career.

The player, who can play at either right back or in midfield, only made 12 first team appearances last season after needing an operation to repair a serious muscle injury in his right leg and he has not played since Xavi Hernandez arrived as first team coach.

“I want to thank the club, the President (Joan Laporta) and the coach. Xavi told me to have the operation and he has shown confidence in me,” said Roberto.

“I am very grateful to the club and Xavi and I will return the confidence they have shown in me on the pitch,” he added. Enditem
