HONG KONG, July 2 (Xinhua) — The COVID-19 pandemic continued to spread in Asia-Pacific countries as Indonesia recorded its highest daily spike of 25,830 new cases on Friday while India’s death toll rose to 400,312.

India’s death toll from COVID-19 surpassed 400,000, said the health ministry.

As many as 853 people died in the past 24 hours, taking the country’s death toll to 400,312.

Besides, 46,617 new cases were recorded since Thursday morning, taking the total tally to 30,458,251.

Currently there are 509,637 active cases in the country, with a decrease of 13,620 during the period.

Indonesia recorded 25,830 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours on Friday, a fresh record of the daily spike, bringing the total tally to 2,228,938, the Health Ministry said.

The COVID-19-related death toll added by 539 to 59,534, the ministry reported.

Additional 11,578 recovered patients were discharged from hospitals, raising the total number of recoveries from the pandemic in the Southeast Asian country to 1,901,865.

The Philippines’ Department of Health (DOH) reported 6,192 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 1,424,518.

The death toll climbed to 24,973 after 177 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH said.

The Philippines, with a population of more than 110 million, has tested more than 14 million people since the outbreak in January 2020.

Thailand reported record-high daily COVID-19 deaths for the third day in a row, 61 new fatalities, as the Southeast Asian country struggled to contain its worst wave of the outbreak so far.

The Center for the COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), the country’s COVID-19 task force, also reported 6,087 new cases, the second-highest daily tally since the pandemic began, raising the total number of infections to 270,921.

The country’s death toll has risen to 2,141, soaring from less than 100 at the beginning of April when the latest outbreak started to spread.

Afghanistan reported 1,309 new COVID-19 cases and 59 more deaths in 24 hours, raising the national tally to 123,465 and 5,107 respectively, the Public Health Ministry said.

Meanwhile, 776 people recovered during the cited period, according to the ministry.

More than 621,000 tests for COVID-19 have been conducted in Afghanistan since February last year, showed the official data.

Pakistan on Thursday reported 1,277 new COVID-19 cases, the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) said on Friday.

The NCOC, a department spearheading Pakistan’s campaign against the pandemic, said that the country’s number of overall confirmed cases rose to 959,658, including 905,430 recoveries.

There are currently 31,910 active cases, with 1,863 of them being in critical condition.

According to the NCOC, 24 more deaths were reported on Thursday, raising the death toll to 22,345.

South Korea reported 826 more cases of COVID-19 as of midnight Thursday compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 158,549.

The daily caseload was up from 762 in the previous day, marking the highest since Jan. 7. The daily average caseload for the past week was 680.
