MEHTERLAM, Afghanistan, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) — The driver of a mini-bus lost his life and 14 commuters sustained injuries in a road accident in Afghanistan’s eastern Laghman province on Sunday, said a statement of the provincial police office Monday.

The accident took place late Sunday when the ill-fated mini-bus collided with a military van from opposite direction outside provincial capital Mehterlam city, killing the bus driver on the spot and injuring 14 travelers including women and children, the statement added.

Some injured passengers are in critical condition and an investigation into the accident is underway, said the statement without providing more details.

Ramshackle roads, reckless driving and lack of safety measures in passenger vehicles often contribute to traffic accidents in Afghanistan.

A similar road accident claimed two lives and injured four others in the eastern Wardak province last week. Enditem
