MADRID, July 23 (Xinhua) — Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema has tested positive for COVID-19, the club confirmed on Friday in a brief announcement on their official website.

Thus, the 33-year-old striker joins a long list of Real Madrid players who have been infected by the coronavirus, Raphael Varane, Nacho Fernandez, Eden Hazard and Dani Carvajal, as well as former captain Sergio Ramos, former coach Zinedine Zidane and club president Florentino Perez.

Benzema is currently on holiday in Lyon, France after taking part in this summer’s European Championship and will not be able to return to Spain until he has completed his time in quarantine and given a negative test result for the virus.

With Real Madrid due to kick off their new La Liga season away to Alaves on August 14th, Benzema has to be considered a doubt for the opening game of the campaign. Enditem
