ISLAMABAD, March 23 (Xinhua) — Pakistan on Thursday observed the 83rd Pakistan Day, also known as the Pakistan Resolution Day or Republic Day.

The day is celebrated annually to mark the passing of the Lahore Resolution on March 23, 1940, which is a major milestone in the struggle for an independent state.

Pakistani President Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif in their separate messages on the occasion paid homage to the “relentless struggle” of the founding fathers of the country.

The day started with a 31-gun salute in the capital Islamabad and a 21-gun salute in provincial capitals.

Change of guards ceremonies were also held at the mausoleums of the founding father Muhammad Ali Jinnah and national poet Muhammad Iqbal in Karachi and Lahore, respectively.

Meanwhile, the military parade, which was to be held at the President House, was postponed due to heavy rains in the capital Islamabad and is rescheduled to be held on Saturday, said a statement from the President House.

The national flag was hoisted high on all major government and private buildings across the country.

Rallies and seminars were organized in cities to highlight the importance of the Lahore Resolution in the creation of Pakistan.

A ceremony was held at the President House, wherein Alvi conferred awards and medals to the people for their outstanding services to the country in different fields. Enditem
