MADRID, May 9 (Xinhua) — Athletic Club Bilbao on Monday announced that veteran attacking midfielder, Raul Garcia has extended his contract until the end of June 2023.

The news comes just two days after the 35-year-old made history by becoming the player with the third-highest number of appearances in La Liga.

Raul played his 551st league game (293 of which he has made for his current club) in Athletic’s 0-0 draw at home to Valencia on Saturday, meaning he has made one more appearance than Real Madrid legend Raul Gonzalez, and that only Betis’ winger Joaquin Sanchez (596) and former Athletic Club Barcelona and Valencia keeper Andoni Zubizarreta (632) have made more league appearances than he has.

Raul began his career with Osasuna and then joined Atletico Madrid, moving to Athletic in the summer of 2015, scoring a total of 80 goals in his 293 appearances for the club.

In this campaign, he has played in 32 league games and scored six goals, making him the club’s second-highest scorer this season.

“My aim continues to be to win and to compete at the highest level,” commented Garcia in a short video to announce the new contract. Enditem
