Myanmar’s traditional Thingyan Water Festival kicks off

YANGON, April 13– Myanmar’s traditional water festival was kicked off across the country Wednesday morning with opening ceremonies held in regions and states. The opening ceremony of Yangon’s water festival was held at the mayor’s pavilion erected in front of the Yangon City Hall. Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein unveiled the festival.

YANGON, April 13 (Xinhua) — Myanmar’s traditional water festival was kicked off across the country Wednesday morning with opening ceremonies held in regions and states.

The opening ceremony of Yangon’s water festival was held at the mayor’s pavilion erected in front of the Yangon City Hall. Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein unveiled the festival.

With dance troupes in colorful dress performing, the traditional water festival is celebrated across the country.

This year’s traditional Thingyan water festival will run for four days until Saturday. The Myanmar New Year falls on Sunday.

Throwing of water during the festival symbolizes the washing away of the previous year’s sins and the anticipation of starting a new year with a clean slate.

Among Myanmar’s 12 seasonal festivals throughout the year, the Thingyan water festival represents the grandest which is believed to bring peace and prosperity to everyone. Enditem
