KUALA LUMPUR, July 13 (Xinhua) — Malaysia reported 11,079 new COVID-19 infections in the highest daily spike since the outbreak, bringing the national total to 855,949, the Health Ministry said Tuesday.

Another 125 deaths have been reported, pushing the death toll to 6,385.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah warned in a press conference that fresh infections are expected to surge in the coming weeks as more infectious new variants are spreading, and increased testing is being done in hard-hit areas like the Klang Valley area, encompassing the capital city of Kuala Lumpur and part of the adjacent Selangor state, where more than half of Tuesday’s cases were reported.

Meanwhile, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Khairy Jamaluddin revealed that 204 workers at a vaccination center have tested positive for COVID-19.

The cases were detected following a mass screening exercise on all workers and volunteers at the vaccination center, located in the Selangor state capital Shah Alam, he told a separate press conference.

The center has been closed for disinfection on Tuesday while those who had their vaccinations performed there have been advised to self-monitor for symptoms. Enditem
