CAIRO, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) — The leaders of Egypt, Jordan and the Palestinian Authority held on Thursday a trilateral summit in Cairo to discuss ways of reviving the peace process between the Palestinians and the Israelis and put an end to their decades-long conflict, said the Egyptian presidency.
Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas and Jordanian King Abdullah II started their summit with a closed session, then the delegations led by the three leaders convened “to coordinate positions and visions on a number of issues related to the Palestinian cause,” Egyptian presidential spokesman Bassam Rady said in a statement.
During the summit, Sisi presented “Egypt’s vision of how to revive the peace process, stabilize the truce in the Gaza Strip and reconstruct the strip,” stressing that achieving inter-Palestinian unity via ending the long-standing division between the West Bank and the Gaza Strip is a prerequisite for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
The Palestinian president and the Jordanian king praised Egypt’s “sincere and relentless efforts” in supporting the Palestinian cause and its recent role in reaching and maintaining a cease-fire between Israel and Gaza-ruling Hamas after several days of deadly violence and assisting the reconstruction process in Gaza.
The three leaders agreed on the importance of working on achieving “all the legitimate rights, hopes and aspirations of the Palestinian people.”
The summit also reiterated the support of Cairo and Amman for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been going on for decades, following the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and the Western-backed creation of Israel in 1948. Enditem
