JERUSALEM, July 23 (Xinhua) — The number of active coronavirus cases in Israel surpassed 10,000 on Friday morning, according to data released by the country’s Ministry of Health.

The number of active cases in Israel has risen since Thursday evening by 452 to 10,194, the highest since March 27, it said.

The total number of coronavirus cases has risen to 857,554, while the death toll currently stands at 6,457.

The number of patients in serious condition rose from 75 to 81, while the number of recoveries rose to 840,903.

On Thursday evening, the ministry said that the effectiveness of the Pfizer vaccine against COVID-19 has dropped to 39 percent in Israel.

The new figure refers to the period between June 20 and July 17, the ministry said, adding that the ongoing decline was observed along with the spread of the Delta COVID-19 variant in Israel.

Since the start of the vaccination campaign in Israel on Dec. 20, 2020, nearly 5.76 million people in Israel, or 61.8 percent of the population, have received the first dose of the vaccine, while over 5.28 million have received the second dose. Enditem
