JERUSALEM, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) — The Israeli army said it shot at two armed individuals near the Syrian border on Sunday, killing one of them and apparently injuring the other.

The incident came as the two men crossed the border from Syria and approached the security fence in the southern Golan Heights, said a statement issued by the Israeli army.

Soldiers dispatched to the scene opened fire at them, the statement added, noting Israeli forces sustained no casualties.

The Israeli-Syrian border has remained largely calm, despite frequent Israeli airstrikes on Iranian targets in Syria.

The Golan Heights is a disputed territory Israel seized from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war and annexed in 1981, in a move not recognized by most of the international community. Enditem
