KONYA, Türkiye, Aug. 9 (Xinhua) — Türkiye’s athletes had a smooth start at the fifth Islamic Solidarity Games, which opened here on Tuesday.

Alperen Karahan claimed the gold medal with 20.46 meters in the men’s shot put and Emel Dereli won the women’s title with 17.25 meters. Necati Er added a gold in the men’s triple jump with 16.73 meters, while Yasemin Can came first in the men’s 10,000m race with a time of 32 minutes 34.33 seconds.

Birhanu Balew of Bahrain prevailed in the men’s 5,000m race with a time of 13 minutes 51.64 seconds, while Ali Idow Hassan of Somalia took the spoils in the men’s 800m in 1:49.04.

Sumeyye Boyaci also won for Türkiye in the S4-5 200 meters women’s para swimming freestyle.

A total of 4,200 athletes from 55 countries and regions are competing across 24 events at the Games, which runs until August 18.
