TEHRAN, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) — Iran’s health ministry on Saturday reported 10,135 new COVID-19 cases, taking the country’s total infections to 5,611,700.

The pandemic has so far claimed 120,880 lives in the country, after 217 new deaths were registered in the past 24 hours, said the update by Iran’s Ministry of Health and Medical Education.

A total of 5,075,482 people have recovered from the disease or been discharged from hospitals across the country, while 5,802 remain in intensive care units, according to the ministry.

By Saturday, 40,063,570 Iranians have received their first doses of COVID-19 vaccines, and 16,532,554 of them have taken two jabs.

“The illegal (U.S.) sanctions deprived the country of its right to have access to vaccines at the appropriate time,” Iran’s permanent mission the United Nations said in a statement on Friday.

“We strongly condemn the imposition of inhumane, illegal and unilateral American coercive measures, especially during the coronavirus pandemic,” the statement said.

Iran has repeatedly complained about the U.S. sanctions which have “negatively” affected humanitarian trades and medicine availability of the country. Enditem
