NEW DELHI, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) — The Indian capital has emerged as the state selling the maximum number of electric vehicles (EVs) in India, as a total of 64,264 EVs have been sold here in the past two years since the EV policy was launched, said an official at Delhi’s Transport Department on Friday.
According to an estimate, the number of EVs sold in Delhi is nearly 40 percent of the total vehicles sold in the national capital over the past two years.
It is also learnt that during 2022 every fifth EV sold in India is sold in Delhi. A total of 33,440 EVs have been sold in Delhi this year so far.
The EV policy was launched in the state in August 2020 and it soon began attracting people to buy the EVs. The aim of the policy was to ensure 25 percent of all new vehicle registrations would be EVs by 2024.
In order to promote the EV sales in the state, the Delhi government has been providing subsidies to the buyers. Till date the state government is learnt to have provided a total of around 1 billion Indian rupees (12.53 million U.S. dollars) to the buyers of EVs in the past two years, which is said to be the highest in any state across India.
Most of the EVs sold in Delhi are e-rickshaws, mostly used in transporting passengers for short distances in busy commercial areas, and e-carts. The Delhi government has also been pushing the sales of e-cycles and e-bikes by offering subsidies to prospective buyers, especially the youths.
According to Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot, the increasing sales of EVs in the national capital was helping it in fighting the air pollution which has been a major problem here, particularly in the winter season.
“Besides, sales of EVs in Delhi is also creating employment opportunities as it’s used in transporting passengers in busy commercial areas. Also, these EVs make no sound,” he added. Enditem
