BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) — Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Saturday sent a congratulatory message to Catherine Colonna on her assumption of office as France’s minister of Europe and foreign affairs.

In his message, Wang said both China and France are permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and independent major countries.

Over the past five years, under the strategic guidance of the two countries’ heads of state, China-France relations have maintained sound and steady development with fruitful exchanges and cooperation in various fields, he said.

At present, the international situation is undergoing profound and complex changes, Wang said, adding China attaches great importance to the development of China-France relations.

The two countries’ heads of state have recently held a successful phone conversation, charting the course for the development of China-France relations, he said.

Wang said he would like to build a good working relationship with Colonna to jointly implement the consensus reached by the two countries’ heads of state, and maintain close communication on major international and regional issues to continuously make new contributions to the development of China-France relations.
