BEIJING, May 6 (Xinhua) — Chinese authorities are maintaining their strict approach to a campaign that will last three years to crack down on environmental crimes involving hazardous waste and enterprises that falsify environment-related monitoring figures.
The Supreme People’s Procuratorate (SPP) on Friday said in a statement that it has jointly issued a circular with the Ministry of Public Security and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment on the continuation of the campaign.
According to the circular, the campaign focuses on two types of crime: the illegal collection, storage, use, disposal and discharge of hazardous waste, and the maloperation of monitoring equipment in certain key pollutant-discharging units, especially acts of tampering with or falsifying relevant figures and obstructing the operations of such facilities.
The circular said that the system to encourage tip-offs for such violations will be improved, with better rewards and protection provided for the people reporting potential crimes.
The three authorities launched the campaign in 2020 and, to date, procuratorial agencies have approved the arrests of 1,912 individuals for their suspected involvement in a total of 1,030 relevant cases, the SPP said. Enditem
