CHARIKAR, Afghanistan, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) — Two children lost lives due to a blast in Bagram district of Afghanistan’s eastern Parwan province on Tuesday, provincial government spokesman Hekmatullah Shamim said Wednesday.
“The gruesome incident took place in Bagram district on Tuesday afternoon killing a five-year-old boy and his 10-year-old sister,” Shamim told Xinhua.
Preliminary investigations have indicated that the device exploded was a mortar mine left over from past wars, the official said, adding that the outcome of investigations would be made public.
Afghanistan is one of the most mine-contaminated countries in the world, where unexploded ordnances and anti-personnel mines, which have been left over from the past four decades of wars often claim lives, mostly children. Enditem
