LOS ANGELES, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) — James Cameron’s science fiction film “Avatar: The Way of Water” stayed at No. 1 at the North American box office for the sixth consecutive weekend with an estimated three-day cume of 19.7 million U.S. dollars, showed figures from the measurement firm Comscore on Sunday.

“Avatar: The Way of Water,” distributed by Disney’s 20th Century Studios, has grossed an estimated 598 million dollars in North America through Sunday.

Internationally, the blockbuster has earned 1.426 billion dollars, including 230 million dollars from the Chinese mainland, for a global cume of 2.024 billion dollars. It currently stands as the highest global release of the pandemic era and the 6th highest global release of all time.

The film is the third Cameron film to hit a 2-billion milestone in global ticket sales after “Titanic” (1997) and “Avatar” (2009), which remains the highest-grossing film of all time at the global box office with 2.9 billion dollars.

Produced more than a decade after the first film, “Avatar: The Way of Water” tells the story of the Sully family, the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive and the tragedies they endure.

Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation’s animated comedy adventure film “Puss In Boots: The Last Wish” came in second with 11.5 million dollars on its fifth weekend, pushing its North American cume to 126.5 million dollars.

Rounding out the top three, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions’ science fiction horror film “M3GAN” took in 9.8 million dollars on its third weekend for a North American total of 73.3 million dollars. Enditem
