KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, June 29 (Xinhua) — The authorities in Afghanistan’s southern region have upgraded the only power plant of Kajaki dam in Helmand province and connected the power to neighboring Kandahar province on Wednesday.

In a ceremony attended by Kandahar Provincial Governor Hajji Mohammad Yusuf Wafa, among others, the transmission line was connected to the grid of Kandahar provincial capital Kandahar city.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Wafa said that the capacity of Kajaki power plant would be increased to 100 Megawatt from 50 Megawatt.

The war-torn Afghanistan imports power from neighboring Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Iran to meet its domestic demand.

The Taliban-run administration has promised to increase power production in the country by upgrading the old power plants and constructing new power facilities inside the country. Enditem
