MANILA, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) — The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has appointed senior economist Safdar Parvez as its country director for China, the Manila-based bank said on Monday.

Parvez arrived in Beijing following his appointment last month. As the country director, he will oversee ADB’s operations in China, including implementing the country partnership strategy (CPS) that prioritizes high-quality, sustainable green development.

Parvez said he is looking forward to strengthening ADB’s longtime partnership with the Chinese government and other significant stakeholders. “The ADB will continue the effective work we’ve been doing with China as an important player in ensuring environmentally sustainable development and climate change adaptation and mitigation,” he said in a statement.

Specifically, he said the ADB will work together towards solutions for health security and supporting an aging society. “Most importantly, we will facilitate sharing of knowledge and best practices between China and developing member countries of the ADB to support replicable development models,” he added.

Parvez has more than 26 years of professional experience, including over 20 years with the ADB. He joined the ADB in 2002 and has held senior positions, including director for Regional Cooperation and Operations Coordination in Central and West Asia and Advisor in East Asia. He has been a key leader in several ADB corporate strategy reforms and initiatives.

A national of Pakistan, Parvez holds two master’s degrees in economics: one from Cambridge University in Britain and another from Quaid-i-Azam University in Pakistan, and a bachelor’s degree in economics from Government College in Pakistan. Enditem
