TEHRAN, March 24 (Xinhua) — At least 82 people were injured in a 5.6-magnitude earthquake that jolted northwestern Iran on Friday morning, according to the Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA).

The quake occured near Khoy County in the province of West Azarbaijan at 6:46 a.m. local time (0316 GMT) at a depth of 8 km, according to the Iranian Seismological Center (IRSC).

Of the total number of the injured, 70 were in Salmas County and 12 in Khoy County, ISNA quoted Amir-Abbas Jafari, director general of the Crisis Management Department of West Azarbaijan province, as saying.

He added most of the injured were immediately released from medical centers after receiving first aid, and the rest, having sustained more serious wounds, are expected to be released soon.

Speaking to ISNA, Khoy Governor Zabiollah Kazemi said the quake has caused minor damage, having led to the collapse of a number of yard walls and cracks on the walls of old houses.

In late January, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake jolted Khoy County that killed three people and injured over 800 others. Enditem
