4 killed as car falls into gorge in India’s Himachal Pradesh
NEW DELHI, May 5– Four people including a woman were killed after a car they were traveling in skidded off the mountainous road and fell into a gorge in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, officials said Thursday. Deadly road accidents are common in India, which are often blamed on overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
NEW DELHI, May 5 (Xinhua) — Four people including a woman were killed after a car they were traveling in skidded off the mountainous road and fell into a gorge in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, officials said Thursday.
The accident took place on late Wednesday night in the Chupadi area of Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh.
“Last night a car carrying four people skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge killing all of them on the spot,” an official of Himachal Pradesh’s disaster management department said, adding that the bodies have been retrieved from the gorge.
According to the official, the victims were returning home after attending a wedding in a nearby village.
Deadly road accidents are common in India, which are often blamed on overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
Around 150,000 people are killed every year in around half a million road accidents across India, officials said.
According to federal minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari, the Indian government has set a target to reduce road accident deaths by 50 percent by 2024. Enditem
