BEIJING, March 9 (Xinhua) — Chinese stocks closed lower on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.22 percent to 3,276.09 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.16 percent lower at 11,579.99 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 754.6 billion yuan (about 108.3 billion U.S. dollars), up from 716.8 billion yuan on the previous trading day.

Shares related to steel, media and entertainment industries led the gains, while those of the hotel and tourism sectors were among the biggest losers.

The ChiNext Index, tracking China’s Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.21 percent to close at 2,372.68 points on Thursday. Enditem
