Twitter chooses Ghana for Africa HQ

The social media giant says that as a champion for democracy, Ghana is a supporter of free speech, online freedom and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate.

CAPE TOWN, April 13 (ANA) – American microblogging and social networking service Twitter has announced that its Africa headquarters will be based in Ghana.

The company’s co-founder, Jack Dorsey, revealed the news on the social media platform on Monday, and thanked Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo.

In a statement, the company said to truly serve the public conversation, it must be more immersed in the rich and vibrant communities that drive the conversations taking place every day across the African continent.

The company said that its mission is to serve the public conversation, and that it’s essential, for the world and for Twitter, to increase the number of people who feel comfortable participating in it.

Furthermore, the company said that to do this, it will need to make it easier for everyone to join in and provide more relevant experiences for people across the world.

The social media giant said that as a champion for democracy, Ghana is a supporter of free speech, online freedom and the Open Internet, of which Twitter is also an advocate.

The company added: “Ghana’s recent appointment to host the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area aligns with our overarching goal to establish a presence in the region that will support our efforts to improve and tailor our service across Africa.”

The company said as part of their long-term commitment to the region, they will continue to explore compelling ways to use the positive power of Twitter to strengthen communities through employee engagement, platform activation and corporate giving.
