Caf bans ASC Jaraaf official for referee assault
JOHANNESBURG, June 3 (ANA) – The Confederation of African Football (Caf), on Wednesday, banned Senegalese football club ASC Jaraaf official Youssou Dial for two years for assaulting a referee during their African Confederation Cup quarterfinal, in Dakar, on May 23.
Two Jaraaf players who were also involved in the incident were banned for six matches.
Jaraaf won the second leg clash 2-1 against Cameroon’s Coton Sport. However, Coton Sport advanced on away goals with a 2-2 aggregate.
After the final whistle, officials of the club, led by Dial and some players including Albert Diene and Mamadou Sylla charged towards the match officials and physically and verbally assaulted them on the field. The referee was seriously wounded with head injuries.
After the incident, Caf’s Refereeing Panel of Experts voiced its concerns to the footballing body’s General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba.
Mosengo-Omba said it was deeply upsetting to hear of the attacks and wished the officials a quick recovery. He called for an in-depth investigation by the ‘competent bodies of Caf’.
“These acts of incivility cannot be tolerated,” said Mosengo-Omba.
“They have no place in our football, but unfortunately, they tend to become widespread on the pitch. CAF reserves the right to revise the scales of sanctions upwards, for these acts.”
Elsewhere, Two MC Alger players have received a 12-month ban for assaulting a match official during the African Champions League fixture between MC Alger and Waydad of Morocco.
Following the final whistle, MC Alger players players; Abdelnour Belkheir and Ahmed Boutagga physically attacked the referee by kicking him in the leg. A red card was issued for violent conduct by the referee. – African News Agency (ANA), Editing by Michael Sherman
