Reports indicate that no political party has been duly re-registered two months after the closure of the window period of June 30 2021 which office of the Registrar of Political Parties gave parties to register.
Only 11 political parties have submitted supporting documents, in compliance with the Political Parties Act of 2018.
The office of the Registrar of Political Parties was unwilling to divulge more on the matter but the Centre for Multiparty Democracy (CMD) yesterday said the 11 parties include seven parliamentary and four non-parliamentary parties.
These include Malawi Congress Party, Democratic Progressive Party, United Democratic Front, Alliance for Democracy, People’s Party, Peoples Progressive Movement and UTM.
CMD Executive Director Kizito Tenthani said the parties were waiting for feedback on their submissions, hence no political party had been duly certified.
“Considering that the Registrar set the 30th of June as deadline, and now that two months have gone, it would be important for the Registrar to indicate as to when the Political Parties should expect to receive feedback.
“It is important for the office of the Registrar to be decisive and inform the nation about which political parties are now duly registered and which ones have been struck out of the register so that we can clear the uncertainties,” he said
The country had over 60 political parties registered before the Act was amended.
With the amended political Parties Act, parties are required to declare their source of income, submit financial reports, disclose names of their donors and pay K1 million as registration fee.
