Super League teams have started mobilising themselves to force league administrators to change the nomination process ahead of the body’s polls slated for February 25 at a venue to be announced later.
Blue Eagles and Silver Strikers have joined Mighty Mukuru Wanderers in calling for an independent body to handle the nomination process and eventual elections.
Apparently, Wanderers have officially lodged a complaint with the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) asking the body not to handle the nomination process through the secretariat.
Wanderers Company Secretary Chancy Gondwe confirmed penning Sulom not to handle the nomination process.
“We have communicated formally to Sulom because it is unfair for interested parties to have access to the nomination forms. However, I can’t comment further as we are waiting for the response,” he said.
Sulom President Tiya Somba Banda confirmed the development but said he was not in a position to comment.
“Yes we saw the letter and I don’t have an immediate answer. We haven’t discussed as an executive. We will address the concern once we meet to make our position clear on the matter,” he said.
Meanwhile, Silver Board Chairperson George Kaudza Masina has said Sulom secretariat must not handle nomination forms to avoid compromising the process.
“We are equally afraid. If Sulom, who are interested parties in the forthcoming elections, handle the preliminary stages of the elections by receiving teams’ nominations, there could be high chances of jeopardising the process.
“These are people who are also contesting and for them to receive their own nominations sounds awkward,” Masina said.
Eagles Chairman Alexander Ngwala shared similar statements, saying an independent body should handle the nomination process and elections.
“We don’t want to create a situation where teams start doubting Sulom. Let them step aside from receiving the nominations or appoint an independent body to handle the matter on their behalf. They might be okay with it but let us not create room for suspicion,” he said.
Currently, Nyasa Big Bullets Vice President Fleetwood Haiya has challenged the incumbent [Somba Banda] while former Silver general secretary Mike Tembo wants to challenge Sulom General Secretary Williams Banda.
