Scorchers captain and Inter Milan Women striker Tabitha Chawinga touched heavens when she made history as the first African to win the Serie A Femminile Golden Boot award in Italy.
The Malawian, born in Rumphi District in the Northern Region, had a grand season after scoring 23 goals, eight above second-placed Cristiana Gireli of Juventus Ladies.
In an interview from her base in Italy, Tabitha dedicated the award to Malawians and the whole of Africa.
“This Golden Boot is not only for me; it is for the whole of Africa. Everything is possible.
The sky is the limit,” she said..
Again, Tabitha wrote her own piece of history as the first African female player to win the Golden Boot award in three countries in her debut season.
Tabitha won the same award in Sweden when she was playing for third-tier side Krokom Dvarsatts, scoring 35 goals in 38 matches.
In Sweden, she also scored 43 goals in a single season for second-tier side Kvarnsvedens before moving to China in 2017.
She announced her presence in the Asian nation in style, winning the award with 17 goals while playing for Jiang Sunning, seven above reigning African footballer Nigerian Asisat Oshoala, who is now with Barcelona.
The 26-year old, who was on a season long loan deal from Chinese Women’s Champions Wuhan Jiangda, also hailed teammates and the technical panel.
“I adapted quickly to the demands of Italian women’s football. Thanks to everyone at Inter Women. They helped me a lot,” Tabitha said.
While Tabitha has hogged the limelight in Italian Serie A Femminile, Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen is also on the verge of winning the Golden Boot award in the men’s league.
The Napoli striker has scored 23 goals, two above Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan, with two matches to wind up the season.
National Women’s Football Association President Adelaide Migogo said Tabitha is a star.
“This is amazing for Malawi and Africa. Nobody gave her a chance. Congratulations to Tabitha,’’ she said.
Roma won the Serie A Femminile with 67 points from 26 matches whereas Inter Women finished on position five.
