Striker Richard Mbulu has returned to TNM Super League outfit Mafco FC following the expiry of his contract with South African DStv Premiership relegated side Baroka FC.
Mafco General Secretary Mike Uzale said they had welcomed Mbulu, who signed a three-year deal with Baroka in 2019.
Uzale said they were working on registration processes with both Football Association of Malawi and Super League of Malawi.
“We want to make sure he is eligible to play for us in the remaining matches. He is an MDF [Malawi Defence Force] employee and is back at work. We are now engaging all football authorities so that he starts playing as soon as possible,” Uzale said.
Mbulu scored just thrice for Baroka last season, forcing Malawi National Football Team Coach Mario Marinica to sideline him.
Football pundit Frank Chakanga said it was disappointing that Mbulu had failed to secure another deal in South Africa.
“We all know that Mbulu is a good striker. He has been outstanding for Baroka since joining in 2019. But all is not lost for him. I am sure that he will do all he can to get back to his best so that he attracts the attention of other foreign clubs,” Chakanga said.
Currently, Mbulu is on-and-off for Flames duties having failed to make it into the squad that played Ethiopia and Guinea in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers.
He may not necessarily be in Marinica’s plans but he is in the books for having scored the lone goal against Uganda that enabled Malawi to qualify for the Afcon finals in Cameroon, where Flames reached the round-of-16 for the first time.
The 2016 TNM Super League golden boot award winner was linked with a move to another South African side Golden Arrows in May this year.
The move did not materialise and he found himself in Zambia, where he underwent unsuccessful trials with some of Zambia’s Super League sides.
