It does not get any better than this. Airtel Malawi plc has promised to continue bankrolling the Airtel Top 8 Cup to take the game to the next level.

Airtel Malawi Managing Director Charles Kamoto made the remarks during the 2022 Airtel Zamadolo Top 8 Gala Night at Sunbird Mount Soche Hotel on Wednesday.

“We recognise the contribution of football to the lives of many people. We are very pleased to continue to provide support to those who devote a great deal of time and energy to the game we love,’’ Kamoto said.

The company has been sponsoring the competition since 2017 but, in 2020, it was not held due to the Covid pandemic. Airtel Malawi and Football Association of Malawi (Fam) signed a three-year partnership worth K234 million in 2021.

Kamoto said, since 2017, the competition has changed the landscape of domestic football.

’’Over the years, we have witnessed improved competition among the teams. Going forward, we hope the teams will live up to their expectations,’’ he said.

Kamoto said for football to develop, teams and fans should desist from acts of violence and hooliganism.

Taking his turn, Fam Vice President Jabba Alide, who is Competitions Committee Chairperson, said the 2022 edition was the most exciting ever.

“Our expectations are very high. We expect that this year, we are going to raise the bar further,” Alide said.

During the night, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers were officially crowned Airtel Zamadolo Top 8 champions following their 5-3 victory over Nyasa Big Bullets on post-match penalties at Bingu National Stadium on December 17. The match ended goal-less in regulation time.

Defender Miracle Gabeya was named Player of the Tournament after beating teammate Chiukepo Msowoya and Bullets defender Gomezgani Chirwa.

He received K500,000 as prize money. The Golden Boot award was shared among three players Msowoya, Lanjesi Nkhoma and Clement Nyondo after scoring two goals each
