At least 100 workers from PTC, Food Lovers and Spar yesterday stormed Ministry of Labour offices in Lilongwe to present their grievances on the issue of five months unpaid salaries.
In March this year, Press Corporation Limited sold 100 percent of its shares in PTC to Tafika Holdings Limited.
This week, irate workers also organised a vigil in Lilongwe, where they petitioned the line minister on the same.
Apart from unpaid salaries, the workers are also demanding their severance pay and pension arrears, saying this must happen before the new company can take over.
Labour Minister Vera Kamtukule assured the workers that her ministry would engage their new employers to address their grievances.
“We are very much aware of the situation at PTC. We, as a ministry, have been in touch with new management on the issues. We are doing our best to resolve the issue,” Kamtukule said
The minister said, when people have worked or provided services, they are supposed to be paid in line with contractual terms.
Employees’ representative Moses Banda said they were satisfied with the outcome of the meeting.
“The minister has assured us that she will take action on the matter,” he said.
Recently, sheriffs closed PTC head office in Blantyre in an attempt to recover K300 million which the once-vibrant retail trader reportedly owed Rab Processors.
