Ntopwa Super Queens coach James Sangala has said his side is contemplating changing their recruitment strategy to sign players who are big in stature.
Sangala said this after his side exited the 2023 Caf Women’s Champions League following two losses and one draw in three matches.
“We have learnt a lot from the tournament. Firstly, teams that are doing well have players who are strong and big in stature. Next time, we should think of changing our recruitment strategy so that we identify players with specific attributes and nurture them properly,” Sangala said.
The Amaghetto Queens participated in the tournament for the first time, having finished as national champions.
At the tournament, Ntopwa started with a 1-1 stalemate against Lesotho Defence Force (LDF) before suffering a 1-0 loss to defending champions Green Buffaloes from Zambia.
They lost 4-0 to Double Action Ladies of Botswana in their last match.
Despite failing to go past the group stage, Sangala said the level of competition was high.
“It was a good platform for the girls to showcase their skills. We met strong teams who are champions in their respective countries. This is good for us and we will not be the same,’’ the former Flames and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers defender said.
National Women’s Football Association Chairperson Adelaide Migogo said there are many positives drawn from the tournament.
“Let us not focus on the results only. I believe that the players have gained experience and international exposure. We are on the right track,” she said.
Before the tournament, Ntopwa beefed up the squad with Linda Kasenda and Vanesa Chikupira, who were on loan from Civil Service United Women and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, respectively.
Ntopwa are expected to return home today.
