Nkhamenya Girls Secondary School on Sunday triumphed in the Association for the Teaching of English (Atem) Central East Education Division (Ceed) divisional finals held at Chayamba Secondary School in Kasungu.
The girls’ secondary school, with a play titled The Promised Land drawn from one of Atem’s themes ‘Evils of Corruption’, outshone 15 other participants in a two-day contest that started on Saturday and ended on Sunday.
For coming out top, Nkhamenya has made it to the national final to be held next term in Lilongwe alongside Robert Blake Secondary School and Mvera Community Day Secondary School, which came second and third, respectively.
Atem Ceed Chairperson Michael Zgambo said they ran the contest for two days because they had more schools.
“With 16 schools, we had two sets of teams, with the first on Saturday and the second on Sunday. We are satisfied with the outcome and the performances were sublime throughout,” Zambo said.
The three secondary schools have joined St Monica and St Paul Minor Seminary from Mangochi and Zomba Catholic, who prevailed in the South East Education Division (Seed) divisional finals at an event held at Machinga Secondary School on Saturday, and Nkhata Boys Secondary School, Mchengautuwa and St Patricks Seminary, which succeeded in the Northern Education Division (Ned) finals.
Atem President Dave Mpaso said recently that 18 schools will shrug it off in the national drama final, with the Southern Region expected to dominate with nine schools, whereas Central and Northern regions will have six and three schools, respectively.
Atem is running its contest under the themes ‘Evils of Corruption’ and ‘The Role of Youth in Combating Gender-based Violence’.
