The National Planning Commission (NPC) Monday presented a certificate to President Lazarus Chakwera as overall champion for his continued efforts to promote the Malawi (MW) 2063 vision.

NPC Board Chairperson Richard Mkandawire said the President has demonstrated remarkable passion for MW2063.

Mkandawire cited Chakwera’s efforts to align national budgets to pillars and enablers of the vision as well as completed and continued projects initiated by his predecessor among factors that have influenced the commission to recognise his efforts.

He added that Chakwera has ensured that political party manifestos speak of the pillars and enablers of the blueprint.

He also commended Chakwera for his effort to fight corruption by, among other things, capacitating the Anti-Corruption Bureau to be able to independently prosecute corruption cases as well as giving it enough financial resources to execute its mandate.

“We believe that your efforts, if complemented by the necessary actions by the other arms of government and non-State actors, will accelerate the country’s development.

While your efforts are pace-setting, meeting our aspirations of an inclusively wealthy and self-reliant nation remains a collective effort,” he said.

He encouraged Chakwera to do more and use his influential position to encourage Malawians to be working together.

Mkandawire said mindset change is also key to inclusive wealth creation and self-reliance.

Chakwera hailed NPC for the honour, stressing that the recognition has encouraged him to do more in pushing for implementation of the vision in both public and private sectors.

“Let me, Minister of Finance, say that the national budget should continue to be aligned to the Malawi 2063, the Malawi Implementation Plan, for the country to graduate to middle income [status] as we want,” he said.

Apart from Chakwera, NPC has of late recognised efforts of former president the late Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda, Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara and other individuals.
