The National Planning Commission (NPC) on Tuesday unveiled a 10- year strategic plan that will guide the operations of the commission for the next 10 years.
NPC Director General, Thomas Munthali, said the strategic plan themed ‘Spearheading Malawi’s Transformation Towards a Middle-income Country,” aligns to the Malawi 2063 (MW2063) First 10-Year Implementation Plan (MIP-1) which President Lazarus Chakwera launched early last month.
Munthali said the strategic plan would be a guide on how the NPC would support the realisation of the two milestones of the MIP- 1, of attaining a middle-income status and meeting most of the SDGs by 2030.
NPC Chairperson Richard Mkandawire said the strategic plan was developed through a consultative and participatory process spanning government ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) and various non-state actors.
Mkandawire said by 2030, NPC is expected to deliver on five pillars namely medium and long-term development planning; development plans Implementation oversight; research, learning and communication; partnerships development and management; and institutional capacity building and sustainability.
Minister of Trade Sosten Gwengwe, who represented Vice President Saulos Chilima, at the launch said just as Malawi has a vision, the public entities supporting its realisation should draw-out strategic plans that align to that vision.
“In the case of the NPC, it is clear that you are aligning your mandates towards meeting the two MIP-1 milestones of graduating into a low middle-income economy by 2030 and meeting most of the SDGs by that time. Such alignment in period and focus is worthy emulating by all other public entities,” Gwengwe said.
He hailed the uniqueness of the strategic plan.
This, according to Gwengwe, includes ensuring efficiency in resource utilisation, breaking silo approach to programme implementation, inculcating the value of strategic partnerships and enhancing the importance of communication for development policies.
“Let me assure the Commission, that government will continue to always provide unwavering support, as you execute your noble mandates of facilitating crafting of the country’s evidence-based development plans and overseeing their implementation.
“If failure is not an option for you, as your chairperson said, then you will never walk alone – be assured of government’s full support on this 10- year journey,” Gwengwe said.
