Malawi National Football Team former striker Russell Mwafulirwa has expressed satisfaction with the talent that he saw during the final of Transport Minister Jacob Hara’s spokesperson Kelvin Sato at Engcongolweni F.P. School in Mzimba District.

Sato is sponsoring a K2 million football trophy in Mzimba North East and Mzimba North constituencies, with the final coinciding with his 40th birthday celebrations.

Mwafulirwa said it is unfortunate that some TNM Super League and regional league teams are struggling with the lack of skilled players in their squads yet there is a lot of talent in rural areas.

“We have talented players who are just loitering around in the villages because they lack a platform to showcase their talent. The players I have seen here in Mzimba are very skilled and have a great future ahead.

“All we need to do is find ways of nurturing their talent. My appeal to other sectors is that they should emulate the example that Sato has set in taking football development to another level,” he said.

During the finals, Embombeni FC were crowned champions after beating Thimalala 2-1 in a thrilling encounter.

Sato said he launched the trophy in the two constituencies to scout for players and help them find ways of joining Super League and Simso-Innobuild Northern Region Football Association Premier Division league teams.

“My target is to form one team from the four zones so that it should compete in the Simso- Innobuild League next season. I therefore brought in Russell deliberately to inspire these boys for them to know that football can take them to the world. I grew up here and was playing for Ekwendeni Medicals.

“We have talented players here such as Blessings Singini, who is playing for Ekwendeni Hammers. He is one of the top players from here and there are many more with great potential. So far, I have scouted three players and will link up with Simso-Innobuild and Super League teams to give them a chance,” Sato said.

The trophy was played in four zones and involved 24 teams.
