First Lady Monica Chakwera has accepted Malawi Network of Older Persons Organisations (Manepo)’s request to take up the matron role.

Manepo Country Director Andrew Kavala has confirmed the development through a statement he released on Sunday.

The development follows a January 14 2022 Sanjika Palace meeting network officials had with Chakwera. According to the statement, the First Lady was briefed about the network’s vision and mission of safeguarding and protecting rights of older men and women in Malawi.

“During the meeting, Her Excellency the First Lady made it clear that being old is not a crime and should never be associated with witchcraft, a thing she stressed is a violation of human rights. She thus committed to champion the cause of bridging the knowledge gap to ensure that lives of older men and women are protected and that they are given a voice to speak against abuses perpetrated against them. We, at Manepo, are looking forward to an exciting journey with our matron, First Lady of the Republic of Malawi,” the statement reads.

Kavala told The Daily Times that the First Lady’s decision would help Manepo execute duties effectively. “Advocacy work requires that there should be political will, which makes it easier to move mountains,” he said.
