Ladies’ and men’s teams for Kenyan side Equity endured mixed fortunes in their opening matches of their Malawi tour.

Equity ladies started the tour on a high, beating Bravehearts Ladies 61-31 at Africa Bible College (ABC) Blue Gym before the men’s team lost 47-42 to their Bravehearts counterparts at the same venue.

Inspired by captain Madalitso ‘Montana’ Kadiwa, teenager Faad Billey and Francis Mpakeni, Bravehearts men’s showed great character from start to finish to prevail over the visitors.

However, the Kenyans were not pushovers as they also put up a solid performance in an open game which could have gone either way.

Bravehearts managed a slender 24-23 lead over the Kenyans at half time.

The hosts upped the tempo of the game in the third quarter in a move that saw them finishing on top.

Bravehearts coach and patron Griffin Kalua admitted that the Kenyans gave them a good run for their money.

“It was a tough match but we showed great character. My players followed all the instructions and we utilised our chances well. But we faced a very good team,’’ Kalua said.

Last night, Equity were in action against Central Zone Basketball League (Cezobal) All Stars.

The East Africans are expected to face Southern Zone Basketball League (Sozobal) All Stars tonight before meeting Northern Zone Basketball All Stars tomorrow.

Equity will also lock horns with Malawi National Basketball Team later Saturday.

Last year, Kenyan Port Authority (KPA) also toured Malawi and played a number of matches against local teams.

KPA reigned supreme, beating individual Cezobal and Sozobal teams that they faced but lost 80-71 to Cezobal All Stars.
