Minister of Tourism, Culture and Wildlife Michael Usi has said that fees and contracts for artists crafted by festivals and other events organisers need to be reviewed.

Usi said this on Saturday when he officially opened the 11th edition of the three-day Sand Music Festival held at Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi District.

“As government through my ministry, we will engage various stakeholders to look at this issue otherwise our artists are talented and can perform the same way as international artists,” he said.

Usi observed that many international artists, who have come to perform at events in the country, receive hefty packages compared to local artists.

The minister, who spoke on the main stage named Wambali in honour of legendary musician Mtebeti Wambali Mkandawire—who died of Covid early this year—said the ministry will engage stakeholders such as companies to support the creative industry to export the country’s talent.

Over 50 local artists have performed at Sand Music Festival which ended yesterday with performances from gospel musicians both local and international.

Meanwhile, Usi has also assured the creative sector that the Arts Council whose establishment will among others, help creatives access

subvention from the government would be established.

Usi jumped on stage with pomp as he showed his dance antics before making his short speech.
