Netball icon Mary Waya is back at the Ministry of Youth and Sports as deputy director responsible for capacity building and schools sports.
Waya was without a permanent job following the expiry of her contract on February 28 as director of netball.
The ministry’s spokesperson Andrew Nyondo said the Malawi National Netball Team legend has been re-engaged to help revamp schools sports in the country.
“I can confirm that she is back. Actually, it is one week now since she returned to the ministry. The ministry wants to revamp sports in schools and she is responsible for that,” Nyondo said.
Waya, considered as one of Malawi’s finest netballers ever, worked in the ministry for two years alongside Malawi National Football Team legend Kinnah Phiri, who was director of football.
Phiri is also back at the ministry as director responsible for community sports.
Waya thanked the government for recognising her role in sports development.
“It feels great to be recognised in such a manner and I am looking forward to helping the government revamp sports. I promise to work hard so that I achieve the set targets,” she said.
Waya is a certified netball coaches trainer and has been nurturing talent through her Mary Waya Netball Foundation.
On the international stage, she is also World Netball Heart Ambassador.
She was recently part of the Namibia national netball team during the African Youth Championship in South Africa.
Youth and Sports Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda early this year promised to improve the welfare of legends.
Chimwendo Banda made the pledge during the launch of Phiri’s book The Four-Legged Wizard in Lilongwe.
