Malawi, Egypt discuss trade at Comesa

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Chakwera said Egypt and Malawi are exploring trade exchange that centres mainly in industrial strengths. “The study brings to focus the recent tropical cyclone that made a landfall in Madagascar, Mozambique and Malawi in February and March of this year and which was described as the worst cyclone in decades,” she said.

President Lazarus Chakwera and his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah El-Sisi have agreed to intensify trade, investment and climate change programmes between their countries.

The two leaders help talks on Thursday in Lusaka on the sidelines of the Comesa meeting.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Chakwera said Egypt and Malawi are exploring trade exchange that centres mainly in industrial strengths.

“We have agreed to maintain engagement at all levels of government and state through the Joint Permanent Commission of Cooperation between the two nations,” said Chakwera.

The President also disclosed that the two leaders will soon meet to discuss areas that can be prioritised in the Cyclone Freddy response.

El-Sisi said his government support Malawi in its recovery efforts.

During the summit, Malawi’s cyclone disaster was among many items that was featured at the summit.

In her remarks Comesa secretary general, Chileshe Mpundu Kapwepwe, while taking stock of what has happened in the Comesa region, quoted a recent report by the Africa Development Bank that has projected stable economic growth for Africa in 2023 and 2024, in spite of the multiple shocks experienced globally in the years past.
