Malawi National Football Team striker Khuda Muyaba has boosted his chances of winning South Africa’s Glad Africa Championship golden boot award this season after scoring his first hat-trick for Polokwane City in a 4-0 victory over Richards Bay on Wednesday.
The feat has taken Muyaba’s tally to four goals in five matches this season.
This has made Muyaba the joint top goal-scorer in the Glad Africa Championship alongside Black Leopards’ Tiklas Thutlwa.
Thambiso Nkoana of Platinum City Rovers is second with three goals.
Muyaba believes it is time for him to challenge for the top scorers’ accolade.
“I am enjoying my game here and my teammates have been supporting me all the time,” Muyaba said.
Muyaba has been in form for both club and country this year.
He scored two goals for Malawi during the 2021 Cosafa Cup held in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, in July.
Flames Assistant Coach Lovemore Fazili said it was encouraging that Muyaba was enjoying game time.
“It’s a morale booster for both him and the country. We need all our players to be in shape for our World Cup qualifiers and the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon,” Fazili said.
Flames defender Dennis Chembezi and midfielder Mike Mkwate also play for Polokwane.
The win pushed Polokwane to position five on the log table with eight points from five matches, five points behind leaders City Rovers and two points adrift of second-placed Free State Stars.
Muyaba joined Polokwane in January 2020 at a time the team was in the DStv Premiership but endured a disappointing debut season after failing to score.
At that time, he had just won the TNM Super League Golden Boot Award with 21 goals.
This made him the first player in over a decade to reach the 20-goal mark in one season in domestic football.
