Jacaranda Cultural Centre (JCC) in Blantyre has said it will hold more exhibitions this year, opening up to visual artists.
With the venue being vibrant in giving artists a platform to showcase their works through outlets such as Sounds of Malawi Acoustic Session that caters for music, JCC says it wants visual artists to be in the limelight through exhibitions.
Having held exhibitions in the past featuring visual artists such as Ellis Singano, JCC Director Luc Deschamps said Thursday that they were targeting budding artists.
“We have received 20 applications from the call we made, each one sending their portfolios. 90 percent are young people, up and coming artists,” Deschamps, who is also French Honorary Consul, said.
He said people should watch the space for more exciting exhibitions focusing on various issues affecting the country this year.
“For the call we have made, we will launch the exhibition on February 11 2023. Six artists – three women and three men will feature. As I indicated, our goal is to give a chance to up and coming artists to get a platform,” Deschamps said.
He also said that they were planning an exhibition with Amour Sare from Burkina Faso, who is based in Mzuzu.
“He is a great artist and we thought we should bring him for an exhibition at Jacaranda Cultural Centre,” Deschamps said.
In another development, Deschamps has also said that people should brace for more French competitions starting next month with the regional finals and then national finals later.
“We have the French Drama competition for secondary schools, Chantons en Francais (Sing in French), short stories competition for college students at Domasi, University of Malawi and Mzuzu University,” he said.
