Civil Service United took a giant step towards reaching the semifinals of the Airtel Top 8 Cup following a 2-0 victory over Karonga United at Silver Stadium Sunday.

However, the tie is far from over as Karonga can overturn the tables with a 3-0 victory in the second leg slated for this month-end.

Ranken Mwale broke the deadlock after 38 minutes in the first half before Innocent Tanganyika doubled the lead at the dot of full time.

After the game, Civil Coach Franco Ndawa said the battle was not over yet.

“It will be a very tactical game in the second leg,” Ndawa said.

On his part, Karonga Team Manager Wilberforce Longwe said it was a bad day at the office.

“It was not our day. We gave Civil too much space and we were second on the ball,” he said.

The second leg of the Airtel Top 8 Cup will start this weekend, with Moyale Barracks hosting Mighty Wanderers on Saturday at a venue yet to be announced.

Moyale beat Wanderers 1-0 in the first leg courtesy of Lloyd Njaliwa’s goal.

Mafco will host Nyasa Big Bullets at Chitowe Stadium on Sunday.

Bullets won the first leg 3-1 at Kamuzu Stadium with goals from Babatunde Adepoju (brace) and Hassan Kajoke whereas Mafco scored through Martin Masoatheka.

Holders Silver Strikers started the defence of the cup with a 1 -0 win over TN Stars in a match played at Chitowe Stadium.

Patrick Macheso scored the only goal of the match.

Stars will host Silver at a venue yet to be announced whereas Karonga will host Civil at Karonga Stadium.

The winner of this year’s Airtel Top 8 Cup will get K17 million whereas the runner-up will get K5 million.
