Football Association of Malawi (Fam) president Walter Nyamilandu has applauded TNM Super League clubs for embracing women’s football teams as part of club licensing.

Nyamilandu’s remarks come in the wake of a successful Fam Women’s Cup final which Ntopwa Super Queens won after beating Ascent Academy 5-3 on post-match penalties.

This was after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time at Mpira Stadium in Blantyre on Monday.

“I would like to applaud Super League clubs for embracing women’s football as part of club licensing. This has given women’s football the impetus to become more organized and attract girls to play competitive football,” he said.

Nyamilandu said the final was an epic encounter that surpassed expectations of many in terms of talent and style of play.

“It is great to see girls’ football attracting such a huge crowd. What is most encouraging is that people are beginning to start loving women’s football. This is a huge milestone in the growth of the game.

“We also saw tremendous young talent on display at the tournament. This is giving us a lot of hope for the future. The standout performance of Rose Kabzere is a wonder to behold and one to nurture for the future,” he said.

Nyamilandu then commended the newly-elected National Women Football Association (NWFA) committee for staging a colourful event.

“Let me therefore thank the new NWFA executive committee and its leadership for organising such a wonderful final. The association’s leadership is very promising indeed. They have started with a big bang and we congratulate them,” he said.

NWFA Chairperson Adelaide Migogo called on companies, individuals and organisations to support the game.

“The final was a testament that women’s football has the potential to attract sponsors and new players. We believe companies will partner us to develop the game. We want more sponsors for regional and national competitions,” Migogo said.

In a third-place match, FCB Nyasa Bullets Women defeated Silver Strikers Women, formerly DD Sunshine, to settle for bronze.
